Alumni Saint Louis Academy was established in September, 1918, as an extension to the grammar school already in operation at St. Louis Parish. Fr. Jean-Baptiste Labossiere believed that the parish could provide a sound secondary level education to the girls who completed their elementary school requirements and began offering a two-year high school program. Staffed by the Sisters of the Assumption, classes were originally held in a two-room setting. Having outgrown these meager accommodations, the academy transferred to the former rectory in 1932 and expanded its course of studies to a three-year program. By 1939, the school was operating a full four-year program and occupied the entire third floor of the present-day Academy building. For more than 70 years, Saint Louis Academy served as a second home to teenage girls and counts many researchers, lawyers, religious, government workers, business leaders, and educators among its over 1,500 graduates. In 1990, as directed by the Archdiocese, Saint Louis Academy merged with St. Joseph High School, which is currently known as Lowell Catholic High School. |
